student press law center conferences
I was in contact with the student press law center twice over the course of my senior year regarding situations on staff. The first time I contacted them was for advice regarding a news story I was writing about the Board of Education. I needed clarification on whether some open records documents I had secured were legitimate and viable to publish. The second time my staff's Leadership Team contact the Center due to a misinformed quote that was published in the second issue of our newsmagazine. We needed advice on how liable we were for his words and how to resolve the situation with the student and his family.

This article uses a pseudonym to protect the identity of a student who has undocumented parents. However, since this was a feature article and included other on-record credible sources such as an immigration attorney, it was able to be published. It was also able to win an award of Superior in-depth news story.
living in uncertainty
In this article I am interviewing a student who is undocumented. With help from my editor and advisor, we decided that it would be best to use a pseudonym to protect the identity of the student. However, since she was the only source in the story this caused it to lose all credibility since it was not on record. Therefore, it was not published.
why are we wasting food?
After an interview with the district school nutrition director, I noticed some inconsistencies with what she was saying and the actual policy that I had experienced at our school. I decided to use her interview as a basis for an editorial. I included photo evidence of a policy at my school that contradicted what she had told me.

Law and ethics unit
I'm a facilitator for the Journalism 1 class, meaning I teach people who are new to the program about our protocols and staff culture. One of our very first units of study was Law and Ethics. We did activities with the Law and Ethics section of the staff manual, as well as watching and synthesizing a movie called Shattered Glass that depicted unethical journalism.
