Leadership and teambuilding

staff bonding

Our staff tries to prioritize staff bonding. Whenever we do an activity, and we do many, we mix everyone up so no one feels left out and everyone gets to know each other.  We play a game almost every work day that we made up called tape ball. We also have an annual Friendsgiving. We don't eat until everyone has gotten their food. We want everyone to feel included and welcome, no matter their background.

positive communication

Our staff is also constantly reinforcing our norms and goals. A way we try to ease tension and create a positive work environment for everyone is by filling out these cards to give to each other for encouragement and just and words, even if we can't express that verbally.

leading difficult conversations

After our advisor received a complaint from a coach about the misconduct from someone on staff, I assisted in leading a conversation about the importance of professionalism to our brand. This allowed for all of us to clear things up and prevent issues like this from happening in the future.

presenting at conferences

As a sophomore I presented at two journalistic conferences: the Southern Interscholastic Press Association and the Georgia Scholastic Press Association. I presented a session on how to engage your audience on social media and another on 21st century reporting and how to utilize the equipment in our pockets: our phones.

After presenting at GSPA, my colleague and I were recognized for our hard work through a thank you letter from the organization. We went on to become leaders in our program due to the encouraging words in this letter. It felt good to be recognized by the journalistic community for our contributions to the conference.

Staff group chat

When I obtained an editor's position I knew that I wanted my staff to have a group chat where I could contact them quickly and easily regarding meetings, interviews, etc. Not only did I have a group chat with my staff as a section editor, but as a member of the Leadership Team, we have a group chat with the entire staff for the same purposes. Having a line of communication accessible and appealing to all members aids in staff bonding. We also have a GroupMe for members who don't have iPhones.
